Museums have the potential of creatively bolstering the local and regional economy, and acting as a platform for debate and discussion, thereby tackling complex societal issues and fostering social cohesion among local communities and disadvantaged groups. To realize their full potential, however, museums need to be properly managed, coordinated and regulated as sector. In Tanzania, the typology, operations and impact of museums, remain blurred despite their number. Consequently, they remain uncoordinated, unregulated and unappreciated as a sector, and therefore their potential is unrealized.
